Rh negative blood is the result of a gene deletion. The D gene was deleted. Why? There are many possibilities, but as recently we have discovered, the rh (D) protein’s main function may have something to do with oxygen transport. It could have been that rh- blood first came up somewhere around an ocean, not likely up in the mountains, where oxygen supply was plenty and the extra proteins were not required.
